Sydney Remodelling & Design FAQ

Do you need strata approval for bathroom renovation?

Yes.

You generally need permission from the strata (or homeowners’ association) to renovate a kitchen or bathroom, or to make changes to walls, floors, or ceilings within your property. This is because such renovations can affect the overall structure and integrity of the building. However, minor cosmetic changes that do not impact the structure or require waterproofing may not require approval.

What is the meaning of remodel design?

In remodelling, “design” refers to the process of planning and integrating structural, mechanical, and cosmetic elements into a project to achieve the desired outcome for the client. It involves designing changes that alter the form, purpose, or structure of a space, often requiring careful consideration of layout, materials, and functionality.

What does a designer do in a remodel?

A designer plays a crucial role in a remodel by assisting in selecting appropriate materials, considering the client’s needs, personal preferences, and budget constraints. They help in making decisions on layout, finishes, fixtures, and overall aesthetics, ensuring that the remodel meets both functional and aesthetic goals.

Is remodelling the same as renovation?

No, remodelling and renovation are different:

  • Remodelling: Involves changing the form, purpose, or structure of a space. It often includes significant alterations such as adding or removing walls, changing layouts, or transforming the function of a room or building.
  • Renovation: Involves restoring or repairing a space to improve its appearance or functionality without fundamentally changing its purpose. Renovations typically focus on updates like repainting, replacing flooring, upgrading fixtures, or making repairs to maintain the property’s condition.

What is remodelling in construction?

Remodelling in construction refers to the process of reshaping and restructuring an entire room or building. It often requires planning permission and may involve demolition and construction work such as removing old walls and adding new ones, reconfiguring spaces, and making significant changes to the layout or function of the structure.

What are the two types of remodelling?

Generally, remodelling can be categorised into two main types:

  • Cosmetic Remodelling: This involves making surface-level changes to improve the appearance of a space without altering its structure or layout significantly. Examples include painting, replacing fixtures, updating hardware, and cosmetic upgrades to cabinets or countertops.
  • Structural Remodelling: This type of remodelling involves making significant changes to the structure, layout, or purpose of a space. It may include removing or adding walls, changing room layouts, expanding or altering the footprint of the building, and reconfiguring plumbing or electrical systems.

What are all the phases of remodelling?

Major remodelling projects typically involve several phases, which may include:

  • Site Preparation: Clearing and preparing the work area for construction.
  • Foundation Excavation: Digging and preparing the foundation for new construction or additions.
  • Foundation Construction: Building the foundation upon which the structure will be supported.
  • Backfilling: Refilling the excavated area around the foundation.
  • Demolition: Removing existing structures, walls, or elements that are being replaced or renovated.
  • Framing: Constructing the structural framework of walls, floors, and roofs.
  • Roofing: Installing or replacing the roof structure and materials.
  • Windows and Doors: Installing new or replacing existing windows and doors.

These phases may vary depending on the scope and scale of the remodelling project.
